GAGAN has put India in Elite Group
The launch of GPS-Aided Geo Augmented Navigation System (GAGAN) has put
India in the elite group of nations in offering space-based satellite
navigation services to the Aviation industry.
A joint effort of the Indian Space Research Organisation and the
Airports Authority of India the GAGAN system has been developed at a
cost of Rs. 774 Crore, V. Somasundaram, Member (Air Navigation
Services), Airports Authority of India said.
Speaking to the media here on Tuesday, Mr. Somasundaram said the GAGAN
would enhance air space capacity and safety thereby benefiting airlines
in saving fuel and time besides reducing emissions in the atmosphere.
The GAGAN would connect all airports in the country, he said, adding
that the airlines would have to fit their aircraft with S-BAS (Satellite
– based Augmentation Systems) receivers to operate under the system and
avail themselves of the benefits, he said.
